Landmarks across Sunderland will be lit up tonight (Friday 24 June) to recognise the lifesaving work of St John Ambulance.

Penshaw Monument, the Northern Spire bridge, Keel Square, Hylton Castle, the lighthouse at Seaburn, Market Square and High Street West will all be lit up in green from dusk on Friday 24 June.

The lighting of the landmarks will mark St John's Day, a focal point of the charity's annual calendar of activity, when the team of volunteers and staff reflect on the past 12 months and plan for future work in communities around the country.

Councillor Kelly Chequer, Cabinet member for Healthy City at Sunderland City Council, said: "Lighting our landmarks for the 'Light it Green' campaign highlights the brilliant work of St John Ambulance, including its important work delivering the NHS vaccination programme, carrying out event duties and providing life- saving first aid training. On behalf of the people of Sunderland I'd like to thank everyone involved with this brilliant charity for all their hard work."
