Work starts to improve safety on the A1290

Sunderland City Council was granted £783,000 funding from the Department for Transport (DfT)'s Safer Roads Fund to improve safety on the A1290.

The first phase of the work was completed in Summer 2018 and phase two is set to commence on site this week

The next phase of the works will see improvements made on the stretch of road from the junction of Glover Road and Spire Road to the roundabout junction with Havannah Road.

The works will include the following highway improvements:

•       Lane narrowing

•       Widening a short section of Glover Road to create adequate highway width for the introduction of a right turn pocket and pedestrian crossing point.

•       New hatching, lining, and surface treatments at the roundabout junctions

•       A signal-controlled pedestrian crossing point

•       Improved physical islands built out to provide pedestrian crossing facilities

•       Improved pedestrian crossing points,

•       Improvements to Bus Stop accessibility

Councillor Claire Rowntree, deputy leader of Sunderland City Council, said: "One of this council's priorities is improving, investing and maintaining our roads and footpaths. This next phase of work on the A1290 will improve safety and accessibility for motorists and pedestrians in the area, and ensure this stretch of road is as safe as possible for all road users."

The work is due to be complete in Spring 2022.
