Sunderland in final stretch of preparations for Tour Series
Sunderland city centre is putting the final wheels in motion to play host to the second round of the Tour Series professional cycling on Tuesday 10 August.
Launched in 2009, the televised series sees Britain's best male and female riders compete against each other in a unique, team-based format as part of a day of sporting and community-focused activities. British sporting heroes, including several Olympians and Tour de France riders have competed in the series during its history and nearly two million fans have watched a round.
Visitors can enjoy the build up by visiting Mowbray Park in the city centre from 12noon where they can enjoy a range of free family activities including circus skills workshops, stunt cycling display and a mind-blowing magician. There is also a Princess and Superhero show, face painting, exciting bubble shows, a climbing wall, local musicians and food and drink concessions.
Everyone Active is providing a cycle themed programme including spin bikes and cycle watt challenge and Sunderland Community Action Group is hosting hourly practical demonstrations on basic bike maintenance and will also have a range of cycles available to hire.
The main cycling event begins at 5.30pm with the women's race, followed by the men's race at 7pm on the race circuit around the perimeter of Mowbray Park.
Councillor Linda Williams, Cabinet Member for Vibrant City at Sunderland City Council said: "We are very excited to be able to host and witness elite cyclists in Sunderland this week and we've worked hard to make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy on the day. From cycling activities that you can try yourself, to children's shows and magic, this event is jam packed with free activity for the entire family.
"We are taking the safe return of events to the city very seriously so we have also been working hard to make sure that this event can be delivered safely."
