More than 240 schemes are included in the citywide programme, with every one of the city's wards benefitting from some road resurfacing.

Around 30km (20 miles) of road are set to be resurfaced, including stretches of A1231 Sunderland Highway, A195 Northumberland Way and Hylton Road.

Footways across the city are also due to be upgraded, including the second phase of paving renewals on Fawcett Street.

June's schedule of work includes resurfacing in Washington and Hetton, and is part of the £5.7m investment in our city's roads and footways. Towards the end of the month, resurfacing works will take place on parts of A690 Durham Road and A183 Chester Road.

Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Claire Rowntree, said: "Highways are incredibly important for our city so investing in maintaining and improving our highways and transport links are one of this council's top priorities.

"We have a robust inspection programme and take into account factors such as weather and resident feedback for when and how we complete maintenance."

There will be a mixture of road closures and traffic management schemes in place throughout the resurfacing works.
