Covid case rate lowest since August 2020

Sunderland's Covid-19 rate is now at its lowest level since August 2020.

Gerry Taylor

The low rate has been outlined by Sunderland's Executive Director of Public Health & Integrated Commissioning, Gerry Taylor.

She has applauded residents for keeping to the lockdown, taking up their vaccine opportunities, but urged people not to drop their guard.

As of week beginning Monday 19 April Sunderland's case rate was 15.1 per 100,000. In the first week of January 2021 it was 573 per 100,000 and the 15.1 figure is in line with a level not seen since 30 August 2020.

The regional figure for the week beginning Monday 19 April is 22.4 per 100,000.

Gerry outlined the low rate in her latest video message to residents. The full video can be seen on our YouTube cannel.

She said: "Thanks to the ongoing efforts of everyone in our community, Sunderland's Covid infections are the lowest we have seen for a long time.

"But even with brilliant news it does come with a reality check. Covid is still circulating in our community. Now is not the time to take our foot off the gas.

"When you're out and about please remember the hands, face, space advice - it's still one of the most effective things you can do to minimise your risk of transmitting - or contracting - the virus.

"Plan ahead for your trips out and if the places you are visiting are overcrowded, consider going back another time."

In her video, Gerry reminded viewers about testing opportunities as one-in-three people show no symptoms at all and regular testing can help find those who may be carrying and spreading Covid bit not know it.

More information on testing is here: Symptom free tests.

It was also important now that people aged between 45-49 take up their vaccine and anyone eligible who had not yet been vaccinated should contact their GP and arrange an appointment as soon as possible.

She added: "Once again, thank you for all you are doing. The picture is looking bright for Sunderland and will be able to stay this way if we continue our efforts. Please stay safe."
