Sunderland City Council releases drone footage of top heritage sites

Sunderland City Council has released drone footage of some of the historic scenic areas of the city.

Penshaw Monument

The footage, which includes aerial views of Penshaw Monument and the surrounding green spaces, was filmed in the Autumn of last year. The video aims to showcase the beautiful scenery that acts as a stark contrast to the busy urban life of the city, as well as highlighting the rich and fascinating history and all the wildlife that inhabits the area.

The drone footage travels down the River Wear, which is near 60 miles long, with the last nine miles travelling through Sunderland and connecting to the North Sea.

The video features some of Sunderland's historic structures, such as the National Trust's Penshaw Monument and the Victoria Viaduct, as well as areas such as Cox Green and the Washington Wetlands Centre.

The stretch of land, which travels between Fatfield and the A19, is an area with an extensive footpath network, allowing residents excellent walking opportunities to improve their physical and mental wellbeing.

Cllr Linda Williams, Sunderland City Council's Portfolio Holder for Vibrant City, said: "The drone footage that has been released shows how stunning our city's scenic routes really are. As the weather starts to improve, it is a brilliant way to highlight all the beautiful areas that our residents can go out walking and exploring.

"It is also very informative, highlighting the incredible history of our city and the wildlife that lives here. It really reminds us how amazing Sunderland is, and I encourage everyone to watch this video and then go out and experience it for themselves."
