Active Travel Fund - A183 Whitburn Road - Two-Way Cycle Lane
October 2023 - update
The council secured funding from the Department for Transport's Active Travel Fund to improve cycling facilities along the A183 Whitburn Road.
This cycle route offers numerous benefits for individuals and communities. Some of the main advantages include:
- Reduced traffic congestion and air pollution by encouraging people to cycle instead of driving, which can help to reduce overall car use and carbon emissions
- Enhanced safety for cyclists by providing dedicated cycle lanes, which can reduce the risk of accidents and injuries making cycling a safer and more attractive transport option
- Improved health outcomes through increased physical activity
Overall, a well-designed cycle route can have numerous benefits for individuals, communities, and the environment, making it an important investment for many cities and towns.
Phase 1 of the works started in January 2023 from the Tram Shelter to Roker Ravine Bridge and is now complete.
Phase 2 of the works from Roker Ravine Bridge to The Bungalow Cafe have now started. Traffic Management arrangements will be in place to help minimise disruption.
All works are anticipated to be complete by Spring 2024.
July 2021 - update
Following approval at Sunderland City Council Cabinet in June 2021, the council is inviting residents to give feedback on proposals for a new two-way segregated cycle lane along the A183 Whitburn Road.
If plans go ahead, the project will use existing space to separate pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles, while maintaining the two-way flow of traffic along the seafront.
The council has secured funding from the Department for Transport to improve the cycling facilities along the A183 Whitburn Road, which will be used to deliver the scheme.
Separating cyclists and pedestrians and installing a number of new pedestrian crossings will enable more people to safely access key recreational hotspots like Roker Park and Cliff Park and help more visitors enjoy the city's natural assets like Roker and Seaburn beaches.
Encouraging cycling instead of driving is another step towards cutting Sunderland's carbon emissions, as the council and partners are committed to making the city carbon neutral by 2040.
The consultation is now live and will run until 6 August 2021.

The Road Safety Audit is currently underway and any subsequent design amendments will be made following completion of the Audit.
It is proposed that the council will take the project to the June 2021 Cabinet Committee to seek formal approval to deliver the scheme on site.
- If the scheme is granted formal approval from the Cabinet Committee:
- The council will notify the Department for Transport (DfT) of the outcome for the funding to be released
- The design team will then begin with the production of the construction works package and begin to engage with our in-house contractor to programme in the works
- If the scheme is rejected by the Cabinet Committee:
- The scheme will not be progressed, with notification issued to the DfT of the decision made
