How to apply for a pavement licence
The fee for applying for a licence under the new process, is £300 and the consultation period is 10 working days (starting the day after a complete application is received) (but excluding public holidays)).
This consultation period is followed by a further 10 working days beginning with the first day after the public consultation period (again, excluding public holidays), for the application to be considered. However, if the local authority does not grant or refuse the licence within this time, it is deemed to have been granted for a year (but not beyond 30 September 2024).
The business can then place the proposed furniture such as tables and chairs within the area set out in the application.
Sunderland City Council has provided documentation to guide you through the application process including Frequently Asked Questions which may answer your queries.
Please read the Guidance notes first so that you have an understanding of what is required.
Following this, applicants are encouraged to contact Sunderland City Council's Highways Section prior to making an application. Highways have been identified as one of the consultees and will make comments on any application received. Highways are available by email at highway.licensing@sunderland.gov.uk or by telephone on (0191) 561 8490; for advice.
