Taxi Licensing Online Training Module and Knowledge Test

This page tells you how to complete the online training modules and knowledge test requirements of a new application for a hackney carriage or private hire driver's license.

All drivers applying for their first license issued by Sunderland City Council need to complete our online training modules and sit a multiple-choice knowledge test.

The online modules can be completed at your own speed. You do not need to complete this in one go, and you will be able to save and return to it later if needed; however, it is likely to take a minimum of 2 hours to complete.

Module 1: Safeguarding and disability awareness  

Module 2: Taxi Law

You only need to pass the test as part of your first application (this does not apply if you are renewing an existing license and have already passed the test).

If you have already sat and passed the knowledge test you can upload your certificate (or any correspondence from the Licensing Team to confirm you have passed the test) to the relevant section of the application form.

The training modules are completed online, and the test will take place at Sunderland Civic Centre.

To ensure all drivers have a good knowledge of the local area and taxi law, the online modules and test will cover:

1. Highway code
2. Licensing Law
3. Locations and routes throughout the city
4. Safeguarding
5. Disability awareness

Your log in details will be emailed to you and you will be able to access the module and complete the training online.

Once you have completed the module and are ready to sit the test and will be sent a link to book onto the Knowledge Test exam. 

Before you apply...

There's a fee of £10 you'll need to pay for the online module application.

You'll need a debit or credit card.

Steps to follow:

1. Complete the online form and make payment
2. The log in details for the online training modules will be emailed to you.
3. Log into the online module with the details provided
4. Complete the 2 modules
5. Book a space for a test. A payment of £22.72 will be required upon booking.
6. If you fail the exam, you will be notified by email, you can then book a retest at a cost of £20.05. 
7. Once you have passed the test, a certificate will be emailed to you.
8. You will need to upload a copy of the certificate when you complete your application form.
