Northern Spire bridge, Keel Square, Fulwell Mill, Seaburn Lighthouse, Hylton Castle and the Beacon of Light will be lit red, white and blue to celebrate the jubilee every night from Thursday 2 until Sunday 5 June.

The Union Jack and a special Queen's Platinum Jubilee flag will also be flying over City Hall over the bank holiday weekend to mark the occasion.

Councillor Linda Williams, Cabinet Member for Vibrant City at Sunderland City Council, said: "The Queen is a widely loved and admired monarch and I know many of us are looking forward to celebrating her Platinum Jubilee this bank holiday weekend.

"This is a once in a lifetime event and it's wonderful to see everyone come together to celebrate."

Events are taking place across Sunderland to celebrate Her Majesty's 70-year reign:

Right Royal Crafts is a free event taking place today (Wednesday 1 June) at Houghton Library from 2.30pm - 3.30pm.

The Big Jubilee Lunch will see Mowbray Park transformed to bring communities together on Sunday 5 June. A joint initiative between Sunderland BID and Sunderland City Council, a whole host of family friendly activities will be on offer from 11am to 4pm.

Jubilee Postboxes: a Sunderland Schools Art Project saw pupils from Sunderland work with artists and cultural and creative organisations to design postboxes to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. Each design is unique and inspired by the Queen's connections to Sunderland. The project was funded by the Welcome Back project.  They are on display at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens until Saturday 2 July.
