Continuing to invest in highways

Drivers are advised that stretches of road across Sunderland will be closed for resurfacing in the coming week as Sunderland City Council continues its £6m investment in the city's roads and footways.

2021 resurfacing

As part of the work to improve the condition of the city's streets, A195 - Pattinson Road in Washington will be closed between 8am and 6pm on Sunday 8 May and sections of the A690 will see lane closures in place on Sunday 15 and Sunday 22 May.

These works are just some of major re-surfacing projects currently programmed by Sunderland City Council and have been programmed to coincide with periods of reduced traffic on these roads.

Further works taking place this week include the re-surfacing of part of Murton Lane in Hetton, which will be closed between 8am and 6pm on Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 April, and Seaham Road in Ryhope, which will be closed between 8am and 6pm on Friday 29 April.

The full re-surfacing programme, including associated road closures, is available on the council's website at Roads and bridges - Sunderland City Council.

Funding for the works is provided through the council's Local Transport Plan and Incentive Fund allocation, its capital budget and the Government's Pothole Fund.

Peter McIntyre, Executive Director of City Development at Sunderland City Council, said: "Improving highways and maintaining roads is a key part of our commitment to infrastructure across Sunderland.

"While road closures can cause an inconvenience, we always aim to carry out resurfacing works during quieter periods where possible. I would like to thank drivers and residents for their patience and understanding through the disruption caused by these unavoidable and necessary road closures."
