Minster Service and landmarks lit for reflection

City landmarks are being lit yellow to remember all those who have died during the pandemic and to show support for all those who have been bereaved.

Northern Spire bridge lit yellow

Sunderland City Council is showing its support for the national day of reflection on Wednesday 23 March by lighting National Trust owned Penshaw Monument, the Northern Spire bridge, Hylton Castle, Fulwell Mill and Keel Square, the white lighthouse at Seaburn, High Street West and The Beacon of Light.

They will be lit from dusk to dawn.

Sunderland Minster is holding a service from 1pm as part of the day of reflection.

Yellow ribbons will be available to write the name of your loved one on, and tie to the railings outside the Minister. There will be an opportunity to light a candle and share your loved one's story with others.

Led by end of life charity Marie Curie, the National Day of Reflection was first organized last year to give the nation and communities a moment to remember, grieve and celebrate the lives of everyone who has died over the last two years and to show support for families, friends and colleagues who are grieving.

Wednesday marks two years since 23 March 2020 when the Prime Minister ordered UK citizens to stay at home and the first lockdown began.

Since March 2020 there have been more than 1,075 registered Covid deaths in Sunderland.
