Sunderland celebrates Commonwealth Day 2022
The commonwealth flag is flying at City Hall today and landmarks will be lit up in blue and yellow this evening to mark Commonwealth Day 2022.
The Sunderland flag is one of 900 flags flying across the Commonwealth's 54 member countries.
The theme for Commonwealth Day 2022 is 'Delivering a Common Future' highlighting how the 54 countries in the Commonwealth family are 'innovating, connecting and transforming' to help achieve goals like fighting climate change, promoting good governance and boosting trade.
With 2022 marking the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, there will also be a special focus this year on the role service plays in the lives of people and communities across the Commonwealth.
To mark the day in Sunderland, The Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Henry Trueman raised the Commonwealth Flag and recorded a personal message to be shared online. He has also recorded a video reading out the Commonwealth Affirmation, with the Mayoress, Councillor Dorothy Trueman reciting the response.
In addition, the Lord-Lieutenant for Tyne and Wear Mrs Susan Winfield OBE will be sharing a special Commonwealth Day message. This can be viewed on the Council's social media sites this afternoon.
The Mayor of Sunderland, Cllr Henry Trueman, said: "We can all be proud that Sunderland is part of the collective expression of commitment to the Commonwealth, and today we celebrate the values of international friendship and co-operation which are shared throughout all member countries.
"The Commonwealth is a family built around these shared values and this is reflected in this year's theme as we work together for a world that delivers a common future and serves a common good."
