White Ribbon Day

It is held annually to raise awareness of the international campaign to end men's violence against women. Everyone, but particularly men and boys, is invited to wear a ribbon for one or two weeks starting on Thursday 25 November.

The date is also globally recognised as the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women, The ribbons help symbolise a personal pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.

All 75 Sunderland city councillors have been invited to wear a ribbon and show their solidarity. Senior council officers are reminding their teams and colleagues to show support.

City landmarks - the Northern Spire, Keel Square, High Street West, Fulwell Mill, Hylton Castle, Cliffe Park lighthouse, Penshaw Monument and the Beacon of Light - are all lit for the next two weeks to support the awareness campaign.

The City Council's Cabinet Member for Healthy City, Councillor Kelly Chequer said: "Domestic violence and abusive relationships create problems around the world.

"Wearing the White Ribbon shows our support and helps remind people who are perhaps reluctant to come forward that help and support is there if they need it.

"Any violence is a concern and the White Ribbon Campaign's focus is on men's violence against women. Tackling, combating and preventing violence against women is everybody's business. Please, wear a ribbon."

The City Council is a key member of the Sunderland Domestic Abuse and Violence against Women and Girls Executive Board, a partnership board to prevent and tackle domestic abuse and violence.
