New 20mph zones
MORE 20MPH zones have gone 'live' across Sunderland
Sunderland City Council has introduced the zones in residential areas in Seaburn Dene, Pennywell and Hill View after they were identified as areas where speeding was a concern.
These new zones were part of a city wide programme, and when completed will take the number of new 20mph areas to 12.
Following completion, work will begin on two more zones.
Cllr Kevin Johnston, Cabinet Member for Dynamic City at Sunderland City Council said: "The 20mph traffic scheme is intended to improve road safety and reduce both the number and severity of injuries.
"Reducing speeds not only make an area a more attractive place to live but also help protect vulnerable road users such as children, the elderly and those who have hearing and visual impairments."
The new 20mph zones have gateway signs which signal the start and end points of the zones with 20mph roundels on the ground throughout.
Having 20mph speed zones also provides health benefits by helping to increase walking or cycling and benefits the community.
