Sunderland City Council's Cabinet is due to confirm the schemes at its meeting on Tuesday 23 March.

A total of 243 highways and maintenance projects are lined-up across the city and follow widespread consultation with councillors and community groups on priorities. Condition assessments, traffic volumes and accident analysis have also been studied for planning where works should take place.

Works on more cycle paths, 20mph school zones and community parking schemes are continuing.

A budget of £8.743m has been allocated for projects as part of the council's 2021/22 capital and investment spending budget that was agreed earlier this month.

More details are here: Cabinet highways report.

The programme of maintenance works includes stretches of Sunderland's key routes such as the A1231, A183, A690 and dozens of B roads and residential streets across the city's Coalfield, East, North, Washington and West areas.

Leader of Sunderland City Council, Councillor Graeme Miller: "This City Council has always recognised that investing and maintaining our city's highways and transport links are top priorities.

"Our investment in school and 20mph schemes, footpaths and cycle paths bring further sustainability and environmental benefits too by helping to reduce congestion, air pollution, and supporting public transport and sustainable transport.

"Our highways and transport works are very much of our City Plan for a more dynamic, healthy and vibrant Sunderland."

A programme of maintenance works for the city's bridges is also being outlined at the Cabinet meeting.

These bridge works include the rail and Metro bridges in Tunstall Road, New Durham Road north and south, and rescheduled works to A182 Washington Highway interchange, the A183 Harbour View Bridge in St Peter's, and the Pallion New Road/Trimdon Street Bridge in Millfield.

The Cabinet report outlines the council's ongoing commitment to school 20mph zones, further works on residents parking zones (Community Parking Management Schemes ((CPMS)), improvements to the Shields and Dovetail Road junction in Fulwell, a one-way system in Barnes' Wavendon Crescent, traffic calming in the Redhill area, and a review of subways.
